La irrupción de los alineadores en el mundo de la Ortodoncia es, probablemente, uno de los más importantes hitos en la historia de nuestra especialidad. El hecho incontestable es que hoy día este tipo de tratamientos está experimentando un crecimiento exponencial en todo el mundo. Varias son las circunstancias que explican esta espectacular progresión, pero lo cierto es que va a cambiar nuestra manera de trabajar, desde la planificación de los tratamientos hasta nuestra relación personal con el paciente. Por otra parte, ha permitido que una parte importante de la población que no se veía seducida por los tratamientos convencionales demande ahora un tratamiento ortodóncico que percibe como más cómodo, estético y llevadero. Eso ha ampliado enormemente el grupo de pacientes potenciales, y por consiguiente de problemas a resolver. Pero además nos obliga a renovar constantemente nuestros conocimientos y nuestro arsenal terapéutico en busca de la excelencia de nuestros tratamientos con alineadores, si no queremos caer en la fácil banalización de unos tratamientos meramente cosméticos resueltos “a distancia”. ¿Debemos renunciar a la excelencia en el tratamiento con alineadores o podemos conseguir realmente unos resultados equiparables a la Ortodoncia “convencional”? Nuestra clínica diaria está cambiando a toda velocidad, y ya no hay vuelta atrás… ¿Cómo prefieres verlo? ¿Cómo una amenaza o como un reto apasionante?

The irruption of aligners in the world of orthodontics is probably one of the most important milestones in the history of our specialty. The indisputable fact is that today this type of treatment is experiencing exponential growth all over the world. There are several circumstances that explain this spectacular progression, but what is certain is that it is going to change the way we work, from treatment planning to our personal relationship with the patient. On the other hand, it has allowed a significant part of the population that was not attracted by conventional treatments to now demand orthodontic treatment that they perceive as more comfortable, esthetic, and tolerable. This has greatly expanded the group of potential patients and, consequently, the number
of problems to be solved. It, however, also forces us to constantly renew our knowledge and our therapeutic arsenal in search of excellence in our treatments with aligners if we do not want to fall into the easy trivialization of cosmetic treatments merely solved “at a distance.” Should we give up on excellence in treatment with aligners or can we really achieve results comparable to “conventional” orthodontics? Our daily practice is changing at full speed, and there is no turning back… How do you prefer to see it? As a threat or as an exciting challenge?
